John Murrel was born and lives in Ann Arbor. As a student he spent time in Lake Leelanau, Clarkston and Detroit. He has traveled extensively in England, Belgium, France, Italy, Germany, Ireland and the Netherlands. John earned a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan and a Master of Fine Arts from Eastern Michigan University (EMU) with a concentration in painting and a minor in art history. He has also studied drawing, printmaking, ceramics and sculpture. An EMU favorite class was a plein air course with Nora Venturelli on the Old Mission Peninsula of Traverse City. John is a member of the Saline Painters Guild and the Great Lakes Plein Air Painters Association. He is also a member of a life drawing group and an instructor with ArtBreak Studio. John’s plein air interests are in farmer’s fields, barns, out buildings and machinery. The goal is to interpret the specific nature of a place through repeated visits. He also paints still life and does urban sketching.
