SUMMARY:Tended Time - Cathy Barry Art Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition:  \nCathy Barry has a profound connection to the natural world\, which has shaped her artistic journey. She focuses on expressing gratitude\, compassion\, and a sense of responsibility towards environmental protection. After years of working with traditional media such as oil\, acrylic\, and watercolor\, her art is transitioning to more sustainable materials. The pigments she uses in her collages are sourced entirely from plants\, all collected and processed by Cathy herself from various locations throughout Michigan. This natural paint has become a vital part of her expressive palette\, driving her to approach her work with a renewed sense of integrity and awareness of our interconnected ecosystem. \nIn her collages\, Cathy skillfully combines paper painted with her homemade botanical pigments and intricately punched shapes\, creating a distinctive micro-scale vocabulary. These miniature worlds are thoughtfully assembled within larger contexts\, challenging our perceptions of the universe and our place within it. \nDates: September 19 – December 12 \nLocation: North Campus Research Complex Building 18\, Connection Gallery\, Lower Level

SUMMARY:Belcea Quartet
DESCRIPTION:For the first time in more than a decade\, the Belcea Quartet performs in Ann Arbor\, opening the Chamber Arts Series with their fifth UMS performance. \nTheir program includes Mozart’s String Quartet No. 19\, the last in a series of six sophisticated quartets that he composed over three years (1782-85) and dedicated to Franz Joseph Haydn\, universally recognized as the “father” of the string quartet. Beethoven’s last quartet — and the last major work he completed — closes the program. \n“These were gorgeous and stirring performances\,” said the New York Classical Review of Belcea’s 2023 performance at Zankel Hall. “The quartet’s sinewy\, back-lit sound carried so much of the sonic beauty of the music\, and the energy behind the playing was full of style\, feeling\, and expressive depth.” \n\n\n\nCost\n\nStart at $30 // Student tickets $20

SUMMARY:A2AC Exhibition: Organic Fiction by Hava Gurevich
DESCRIPTION:From A2AC Page: \nHava Gurevich’s work is a celebration of the hidden magic woven through the natural world. Intricate networks of mushrooms\, flowers\, bees\, coral\, and imagined life forms that remind us how deeply everything is connected. In Organic Fiction\, Gurevich explores these relationships through colorful abstractions inspired by botany\, marine life\, and microscopic worlds. \nGuided by the repeating and fractal patterns found across nature\, from pollen grains to river systems\, Gurevich translates fleeting moments into layered compositions that blur the line between observation and imagination. These works evoke not only ecosystems but also thought systems\, inviting viewers to contemplate how life adapts\, transforms\, and regenerates across time and scale. \nRefreshments provided by the artist. \nLocation: 117 W Liberty\, Downtown Ann Arbor \nOpening Reception: Oct. 19\, 2-4pm \nExhibition Dates: Oct. 17\, 2025 – Jan. 4\, 2026

SUMMARY:Cyanotype Workshop: Contact Printing with Plants\, with Angela Chen
DESCRIPTION:In this 90minute introductory workshop\, participants will learn about the cyanotype process and create their own unique cyanotype prints! Developed in 1842\, the cyanotype process — so named because of the characteristic blue color of the prints — is one of the oldest photographic techniques. Inspired by early cyanotype practitioners like the botanist Anna Atkins\, participants will gather flora from Nichols Arboretum to create dynamic compositions of leaves\, nuts\, and flowers. Pre-coated cyanotype paper and all necessary supplies provided. The workshop is open to all UM students\, faculty\, and staff; no prior experience required. \nArtist Bio: Angela Chen 陳勇氣 is a Taiwanese-American photo-based artist\, writer\, and educator from the ethnoburbs of the San Gabriel Valley\, California. Incorporating personal narrative\, alternative photographic processes\, and recycled and found material\, her practice enacts what she calls thinking and making with the ground–a process of sustained attention to place that is rooted in the photo walk. Her work foregrounds what is typically in the background\, showing how what we consider “beneath us” comprise multiple\, entangled\, more-than-human kin. She often prints her photographs on fabric dyed with foraged\, fallen material\, such as nuts and oak galls\, immersing her images in the specific ecologies in which they were taken. Angela is a graduate of the Yale School of Art\, where she was an Alice Kimball Traveling Fellow and Art and Social Justice Grantee. \nThis workshop is presented in partnership by U-M’s Matthei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum\, and the Arts Initiative.

SUMMARY:PHOTOS: Theatre NOVA in ANn Arbor Announces World Premiere of "Dry Summer"
DESCRIPTION:Theatre NOVA\, Ann Arbor’s resident nonprofit professional theatre specializing in new plays presents the World Premiere of “Dry Summer” by Robert Axelrod\, running October 10 – November 2. There will be a talkback with playwright Robert Axelrod after the 3pm matinee on Saturday\, October 11.  \nDepressed and longing to get his life back on track\, gay\, Jewish\, twenty-something Ethan returns to his Ann Arbor family home. When he takes a job as a “sober companion” to his recovering alcoholic neighbor\, an unconventional friendship ensues. Full of Ann Arbor references\, this charming and nostalgic play takes us all home.  \nPlaywright Robert Axelrod says: “’Dry Summer’ is\, in many ways\, a love letter to Ann Arbor\, the community where I was born and raised. This city has a vibrancy and vitality that is hard to put into words\, but I’ve tried to capture that essence\, in some small way\, through this play. It feels like an absolute dream to have the world premiere here at Theatre NOVA.”He adds: “This play tackles some very heavy topics\, but my greatest desire is for audiences to walk away with a renewed sense of hope. Life is filled with challenges\, but it’s also worth recognizing and celebrating the quiet moments of triumph along the way. Mostly\, I hope audiences leave with a bit more hope in their hearts.”  \nDirected by Brittany Connors\, the cast features Sarah Burcon\, Brian Cox\, Laura Mandernack and Nick Smathers. The production team includes Sam Schikora (set\, lights)\, Toni Davison (costumes)\, and Elise Blochwitz (stage manager).  \nDirector Brittany Connors says: “’Dry Summer’ is a story I think almost anyone can connect with. For the LGBTQ community\, it reflects the challenge of showing our true selves\, and the courage it takes to let others in. At its core\, the play is about identity\, authenticity\, and the joy and relief that come with living openly. My hope is that audiences leave with both a sense of empathy and a renewed appreciation for the beauty of embracing who we are.”  \nProducing Artistic Director Briana O’Neal says: “When you engage with a world premiere play like “Dry Summer\,” you are providing a space for new voices to bring their stories to the stage. We’re very lucky to have an Ann Arbor playwright bring this very Ann Arbor story to our stage. The Jewish community and the LGBTQ+ community are vital parts of the culture of Ann Arbor\, and Robert Axelrod has captured a slice of life with “Dry Summer” that reflects the intersections of this community.”  \n“Dry Summer” will run October 10 – November 2 at Theatre NOVA (410 W Huron St\, Ann Arbor). Performances are Fridays at 8pm\, Saturdays at 3pm and 8pm\, and Sundays at 2pm. General admission tickets are $30\, $25 for 65 and over\, and $15 for students with student IDs at the door. Tickets may be purchased online at www.TheatreNOVA.org or in person one hour before each performance. Seating in the theater will begin 30 minutes before each performance. There is ample free parking and quick access to the city’s restaurants\, bars\, bakeries\, and coffee shops. New patrons can find Theatre NOVA across Huron Street from Ann Arbor’s YMCA through a parking lot entrance on the north side of the street.  \nTheatre NOVA presents the world premiere of “Dry Summer” 1 \nTheatre NOVA’s mission is to raise awareness of the value and excitement of new plays and playwrights and to provide resources for playwrights to develop their craft by importing\, exporting\, and developing new work. This activity is supported by the Shubert Foundation.  \n***  \nFACT SHEET  \nWHO:  \nPlaywright – Robert Axelrod  \nCast:  \nSusan – Sarah Burcon  \nGary – Brian Cox  \nDiane – Laura Mandernack  \nEthan – Nick Smathers  \nProduction Team:  \nDirector – Brittany Connors  \nStage Manager – Elise Blochwitz  \nSet Designer – Sam Schikora  \nLighting Designer – Sam Schikora  \nCostumer – Toni Davison  \nSound Designer – Brittany Connors  \nDramaturg – Aya Galang  \nProperties – Brittany Connors and Briana O’Neal  \nTheatre Nova Staff  \nCarla Milarch\, Founding Artistic Director  \nBriana O’Neal\, Producing Artistic Director\, Resident Stage Manager  \nShelby R. SUMMARY:Tended Time - Cathy Barry Art Exhibition

SUMMARY:By Means of a Pencil
DESCRIPTION:October 9 – November 5\, 2025\nOpening Reception October 9\, 5:00-8:00 pm\nClosing Reception: November 2\, 2:00-5:00 pm \nThe U-M Duderstadt Center Gallery presents By Means of a Pencil a solo exhibition by artist and Stamps School of Art & Design LEO Lecturer I Nathan Byrne. \nBy Means of a Pencil brings together a body of work centered around the quirky and enigmatic Swiss author Robert Walser. In this exhibition poetic gestures and nods to Walser are able to flourish as visual forms and objects. The work comprises spontaneous and excessively durational works of drawing\, collage\, and sculpture. \nFor years\, I have been intrigued by the author Robert Walser’s mark making which he referred to as his “pencil method” where he would sketch out stories in a radically miniaturized script on diminutive paper fragments. Walser’s pencil method began when he was experiencing severe writer’s cramp and: “hideously and frightfully hated his pen.” He goes on in a letter written in 1927 describing the freeing nature of this process: “I suffered a real breakdown in my hand on account of the pen\, a sort of cramp from whose clutches I slowly\, laboriously freed myself by means of the pencil.” \nJust as it was with Walser “by means of a pencil” I was able to make peace with drawing by radically altering the process by which I approached the act itself. Eventually\, this became processes like my transcription drawings\, in which I write out an entire novel as a form of mark making. \nWhile this exhibition mines the Walser archive and the spirit of this author\, this work is just as much about me and my immersion in this “world of Walser.” It is about my own engagement with relationships between language and mark making\, language and sculpture\, language and longing. \nThis project was made possible by the generous support of Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan. \nPoster design by Sky Christoph. \nHours: 12 – 6 pm\, Tues. – Fri. & Sun. \nLocation: 2281 Bonisteel Blvd\, Ann Arbor\, MI 48109

SUMMARY:ICE in the Heartland: Community Impacts of Worksite Immigration Raids
DESCRIPTION:About ICE in the Heartland:  \nICE in the Heartland showcases a multifaceted project that gathers and disseminates the stories of communities impacted by immigration worksite raids with the aim of bringing underrepresented narratives to news media\, classroom\, and public discourse. This project comprises qualitative public health research conducted in impacted communities and visual arts generated from the research outcomes. Research teams of graduate and undergraduate students from the University of Michigan\, led by Professor William Lopez\, and the University of Iowa\, led by Professor Nicole Novak\, collaborated with a range of community members and organizers at sites of six large-scale immigration worksite raids that occurred in 2018 in Iowa\, Nebraska\, Ohio\, Tennessee\, and Texas. The researchers visited these sites\, spoke to advocates\, detainees\, their families\, and other community members. In conversation with the seventy-seven interviews\, artists Dalia Harris and Carolina Jones-Ortiz generated ten images that comprise ICE in the Heartland. On display with the artworks are community member testimonies\, analysis on the public health detriments to immigration worksite raids and deportation\, insights to the artists’ methods\, and the curricular materials used in public outreach programs. \nHosted and sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies\, U-M. \nDate: October 8th\, 9 am – 5 pm \nLocation: Lane Hall Exhibit Space\, First Floor

SUMMARY:PTD Productions: Moon Over Buffalo by Ken Ludwig
DESCRIPTION:PTD Productions Presents: Moon Over Buffalo by Ken Ludwig and directed by Daniel Dye \nGeorge and Charlotte Hay\, a husband-and-wife acting team\, are touring Cyrano de Bergerac and Private Lives in Buffalo\, New York. The Hays receive word that Frank Capra is coming to see their matinee\, and if he likes what he sees\, he might cast them in his movie remake of The Scarlet Pimpernel. However\, everything that could go wrong does go wrong\, including a love triangle\, a show-within-a-show\, and a visit from Charlotte’s stage-manager mother. The play is a commentary on the theater business and the power of love and laughter. Moon Over Buffalo is a side-splitting farce with a sense of absurdity\, running gags\, and comic invention.
